Ndary Lo’s Walker walks, swiftly and gracefully, slightly stooped, leaning forward with his arms bent and swinging like an athlete. It is Africa standing, arising and walking, away from its passiveness and pending illusions.

Giacometti? Yes he had heard about him and felt paralysed when he finally saw his work. Quitting sculpture was all he had in mind then.

The answer of an old master helped him through:
“How do you become a great artist?”
“Sincerity, sincerity and sincerity.”

He therefore kept on, headfirst and with no shame, fully conscious of his identity, richer with the heritage he had discovered and made his own.

Ndary’s walkers are not stiff nor are they from Etruscan archaeological excavations. They are his, in recycled steel reinforced bars and resins from auto body workshops, using antique aging processes. Nonchalant and slender like he is, they aspire to spirituality and elevation, mystically, with oversized hands appealing to and praising the almighty.
